Abstract

From a historical point of view China and Europe have a long relationship. From the silk route in the middle ages until today: trade has always been there. This intensified even more since the last 40 years, as stated by Li Keqiang, the prime-minister of the People’s Republic of China. Among this vast trade of goods and services between China and Europe, there is the bicycle industry. The bicycle industries of both Europe and China are huge and well established. Despite that, there somehow seems to be some
misunderstandings when conducting business with each other. This research answers the questions about cultural- and political differences, and the differences in doing business and how to overcome these. In order to understand these differences, it is key to understand both histories. That is why Bicle decided to dive into these topics. From this Meta point of view the research zooms in on the cycling industries from both China and Europe. To do this, an academic desk research approach, together with best practices from adjacent industries have been conducted and used. The aim is to improve business in the international bicycle industry.

What this report brings you

  • An in depth insight in the Chinese culture and politics, starting from Confucius and moving towards today. The influence of Confucianism today is debatable, but still has an influence in how people do business.
  • A religious, political and cultural history of Europe, starting from the 16th century and moving towards today. Chapter two looks at secularization and the modernization of Europe and how European business is influenced by those to movements.
  • Obviously, there are similarities and obstacles to overcome. For example, both want to maintain a well-established partnership, but both Chinese and European bicycle industries and  politics approach this differently. In chapter three these are discussed.
