Thursday Treat: three cool/weird future mobility solutions

Some future mobility solutions seem so far-fetched or too good to be true, while others are more realistic than you may think! In the first edition of ''Thursday Treat'', Bicle presents to you three inspirational, weird, futuristic, and mostly awesome mobility solutions. Collected from the internet and put together in one place so you don't have to search your ass off. Enjoy!

No need to wait for 5G: Car2X is here

It is said that in order to optimize automonous driving, 5G would be ideal. But 5G is not yet developed through and therefore not available as a technology for such solutions. No need to worry, though, Car2X - developed by Volkswagen - is a way better option. Car2X is based on a radio connection and does not require Wi-Fi or a mobile internet connection. “As no data is stored on the backend with local data transmission in contrast to mobile network connections, data security is also assured,” explains Thomas Biehle, Director of Cooperative Security and Electronic Processes at Volkswagen.

Car2X technology in the first generation warns the driver of problems such as roadside breakdowns, the end of a traffic jam or the location of an accident. But also emergency braking situations: If a driver slams on the brakes or an automatic braking system is triggered, this also affects the traffic behind.

Most of all: this is not a long-term innovation. It should be operational in 2019. With this technology, Volkswagen aims to make traffic safer. It is only a matter of time before other industrires, sich as the bicycle indusrty, pick up on this and implement it in their vehicles - aiming to make traffic a lot safer!

Volante Vision Concept by Austin Martin

Austin Martin is known for its luxury cars and of course the James Bond movies. However, 007's future Austin Martin may not drive; times are changing and so is mobility. Austin Martin thought outside the box and came up with a concept that indeed does not drive, it flies! The Volante Vision Concpet is a luxury concept aircraft with vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) capabilities. So, no need to get stuck in traffic anymore, just fly over it!

Although Austin Martin stated that this is a near-future study and a demostration of their design capabilities, the philosphy behind it is appealing. Aston Martin President and CEO Dr Andy Palmer said: “With the population in urban areas continuing to grow, congestion in towns and cities will become increasingly demanding. We need to look at alternative solutions to reduce congestion, cut pollution and improve mobility. Air travel will be a crucial part in the future of transportation, the Volante Vision Concept is the ultimate luxury mobility solution.

in this project Aston Martin is working with partners at Cranfield University, Cranfield Aerospace Solutions, and Rolls-Royce. Watch the clip for a glimpse of the future of mobility!

Batteries for a sustainable future!

We all know that the future of mobility is electric. But we don'tyet know what that is going to look like. Online we find visionaires with crazy ideas, but also more realistic solutions to make our planet more sustainable, also for the next generations. New Motion, one of Europe's biggest providers in electrical charging solutions, is one of those healthy realists. They see a future in batteries. Batteries are already all around us in (Light) Electric Vehicles. And in the future (L)EVs will only become more popular, meaning more batteries. These could be used to store, but also to trade energy when needed.

In this video by Mashable, Sander Ouwekerk, Director of Business and Development, explains how New Motion sees this and plans to make this operational.
